$41M in ganja found, destroyed in Upper Berbice raid

Police have destroyed an estimated $41 million worth of cannabis following an eradication exercise at Ebini, Upper Berbice River, on Saturday.

The operation was conducted between 09:00h and 18:00h on Saturday, by police ranks. During the exercise, ranks discovered a cannabis cultivation measuring approximately one acre, with about 700 suspected cannabis plants ranging from four to seven feet in height. Polce said a makeshift camp measuring approximately 20 feet by 20 feet was also found, where ranks discovered approximately 100 pounds of dried cannabis. The cannabis plants, dried cannabis and makeshift camp were subsequently destroyed by fire. Police estimated the value of the narcotics destroyed at $41,060,440. No arrests were made and investigations are continuing.

The Ebini operation comes as police continue to conduct cannabis eradication exercises in various parts of the country. On Thursday, ranks destroyed two cannabis farms at Yaruni Bend, Linden, Upper Demerara River, Region 10. The farms covered approximately eight acres and contained an estimated 53,000 cannabis plants. Two makeshift camps, two drying areas and approximately 10 pounds of dried cannabis were also discovered. Police valued the narcotics destroyed at $22,038,728. Just last week, police also destroyed approximately $22.8 million worth of cannabis at Long Savannah, Canje Creek, Region Six. Three farms covering approximately 10.5 acres were discovered, containing an estimated 53,500 cannabis plants. A single-barrel shotgun, four shotgun cartridges, a multi-coloured haversack containing three rounds of matching ammunition, two live 9mm rounds and one live .32 calibre round were also found during that exercise.
