MINISTER of Homeland Security Roger Alexander says the regulation of fireworks is not working, and in the new year he intends to take a note to Cabinet recommending a ban on “noisy” fireworks and allowing only silent ones.
The minister said he will also recommend a ban on some toy guns such as the gel blaster guns, along with increased fines and imprisonment for people who illegally import and use scratch bombs.
Both Houses of Parliament—the House of Representatives and the Senate—unanimously passed the “fireworks” legislation, the Summary Offences (Amendment) Act 2025, which President Christine Kangaloo assented to on December 16. The legislation was proclaimed on December 19.
