In the wake of the U.S. military strikes in Venezuela early Saturday, Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar clarified the nation’s position.
“Earlier this morning, Saturday 3rd January 2026, the United States commenced military operations within the territory of Venezuela. Trinidad and Tobago is NOT a participant in any of these ongoing military operations. Trinidad and Tobago continues to maintain peaceful relations with the people of Venezuela,” the Prime Minister said in a statement released from Port of Spain.
The statement comes amid heightened regional concern, given Trinidad and Tobago’s proximity to Venezuela and its historically close economic and cultural ties with its neighbour. The Prime Minister emphasised that Port of Spain remains committed to diplomatic channels and peaceful engagement, while monitoring developments closely.
