Discipline is fundamental – GFS Chief tells 107 new recruits

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has welcomed 107 new recruits who began training at the Leonora Training School, West Coast Demerara (WCD) on September 1, 2026. The recruitment is part of the Service’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its human resources and build its capacity to respond to emergencies and serve communities across Guyana.

Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham welcomed the recruits and encouraged them as they begin their training. During his address, Wickham stressed the importance of discipline, describing it as a fundamental principle of the firefighting profession and one that recruits must maintain throughout their training and careers. He also urged the recruits to be their brother’s keeper by supporting one another and embracing teamwork as they work towards completing the programme. The recruits are expected to undergo several months of intensive training aimed at preparing them for the responsibilities and demands of the firefighting profession.
