Seven firefighters attached to the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) have successfully completed a two-day Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation and map reading training programme, aimed at enhancing operational capabilities and strengthening emergency response across the country. The training, facilitated by the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC), was held from July 22-23, 2026, at the University of Guyana’s Tain Campus in Berbice.

The training provided participants with practical instruction in navigation techniques, map interpretation, and the effective use of modern GPS technology. The programme forms part of the GFS’s ongoing commitment to building the technical capacity of its ranks and ensuring firefighters are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively in diverse operational environments.

GPS navigation and map reading are essential competencies for emergency responders, particularly during search and rescue operations, bush and grass fires, disaster response and incidents in remote or unfamiliar locations. The firefighters who completed the training were Haney, Joseph, Mingo, and Ramesaar of the New Amsterdam Fire Station, along with Raghunauth of the Rose Hall Fire Station; Hopper of the Corriverton Fire Station; and Firefighter Richmond of the Onverwagt Fire Station.
