Behind  the Uniform… Firewoman, Makeda Cornette champions the rights of women and girls

Makeda Cornette joined the Guyana Fire Service, beginning a career that has allowed her to grow professionally while helping to protect lives and property. For Cornette, service extends beyond her duties as a firefighter. It also means supporting women and girls in her community.

The leading firewoman is stationed at the Fire Hydrant Department, where she serves as the administrative secretary to the officer in charge. Her work supports a department responsible for a critical part of firefighting operations: access to water.

Outside the Fire Service, Cornette is involved with Women Across Differences (WAD), a non-governmental organisation that works with women and girls. Her connection to WAD is personal. She was first a beneficiary and later remained involved as a member.
