A 43-year-old man fell victim to a Facebook loan scam that cost him $4,000.
Police said the man applied online for a $30,000 loan after seeing what appeared to be a Massy Loan Finance advertisement on Facebook on August 4. The same day, he received an email claiming his loan was approved, but that he first needed to pay a $1,000 deposit.
On August 12, he went to RBC Independence Square and deposited the money into an account with a name. He later received another email requesting $2,000 for “processing, transfer and disbursement fees,” promising the amount would be refunded when the $33,000 loan was issued. He paid the money into a different RBC account belonging to another name.
