Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez on Saturday called on the United States to provide “proof of life” for President Nicolás Maduro, following claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, had been captured by American forces.
Speaking by telephone to Venezuelan television, Rodríguez said she did not know the whereabouts of Maduro or Flores after pre-dawn explosions and low-flying aircraft were reported over Caracas and several other cities, including Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira.
The statements come after Trump announced on social media that U.S. forces had carried out a “large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader” in conjunction with U.S. law enforcement. Videos from Caracas showed smoke rising from key military facilities, including La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna military base, and reports indicated power outages in some neighborhoods.
