U.S. President Donald Trump claimed early Saturday that American forces had captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and flown them out of the country following a pre-dawn military assault on Caracas and surrounding regions.
In a post on social media, Trump said the United States had carried out a “large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader,” adding that the operation was conducted in conjunction with U.S. law enforcement agencies. He said further details would be released later Saturday.
The announcement came as explosions rocked Venezuela’s capital before dawn, with residents reporting at least seven blasts, the sound of low-flying aircraft and power outages in parts of the city. Videos shared on social media showed flashes in the sky and smoke rising from several locations.
