The Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM convened early on Saturday, 3 January, following reports of U.S. military action in Venezuela, emphasising that the situation is of “grave concern” for the Caribbean region.
In a brief statement, CARICOM said it is actively monitoring developments in Venezuela, noting that the strikes could have implications for neighboring countries. The organisation pledged to provide updates as more information becomes available.
The statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, had been captured during pre-dawn military operations targeting Caracas and surrounding states, including Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira. Trump said the operation was conducted in conjunction with U.S. law enforcement.
