A small boat carrying 25 Venezuelans to Trinidad and Tobago capsized early on February 20. According to initial reports, several people were rescued, while many still remain missing.
Relatives of the victims told Newsday on February 21 that they heard nothing more about the boat until rumours of a capsized boat spread.
The boat had left Tucupita, Delta Amacuro state, Venezuela, on the night of February 19. Before heading to TT, the captain decided to make a stopover in Pedernales, the last point of land between Venezuela and TT.
