A 21-year-old West Coast Berbice (WCB) man has died after the car which he was driving crashed into a parked tractor and trailer shortly after midnight on Monday. Dead is Ayinde Rogers of #22 Bel Air, WCB. According to police, Rogers was alone in the vehicle when, at about 12:05 Monday morning, he was proceeding along the Trafalgar Public Road, WCB, Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice). Investigators believe he may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing the car to veer off the roadway and collide with a parked tractor and trailer. The impact left the vehicle extensively damaged, with sections of the roof and body crushed and torn apart. The injured man was pulled from the wreckage by persons at the scene shortly before police arrived.

“Daddy, my brother dead”

Rogers’ father, Dave Rogers, said he was awakened by relatives and initially struggled to believe that his son had died. “He said, ‘Daddy, my brother dead, my brother dead.’ I said, I couldn’t believe it. I said, no way. I got a friend, a very good friend of mine. The man called me and said, ‘You got to go, you got to go and see what happened to your son.’ And I left and I go. I see my son lying on the ground, dead,” the grieving father said. Only hours before the crash, Rogers had returned from playing cricket on the Corentyne. Rogers was the captain of Achievers Cricket Club U-23 team and had represented Berbice at the U-19 level last year.
