The East and South West zones notched their second straight victories when action in the TT Cricket Board/Bess Motors Under-15 Inter Zone tournament continued on February 4.
In Balmain, South West got a five-wicket triumph over North East thanks to a polished knock of 88 not out from top-order batsman Keshav Mongru. Batting first, North East were restricted to 191 for nine, with Marley Richards hitting 53 off 88 balls. Eshanan Deopersad led the South West attack with figures of three for ten.
Deopersad also played a role with the bat as he scored 56 and shared in a 106-run stand with Mongru. Both Deopersad and Arnaldo Premchand (duck) fell with the score on 120, but Mongru then put on 51 for the fourth wicket with Christiano Beharry (21) to take South West closer to the target as they eventually got to 192 for five with more than eight overs to spare.
In Moruga, East just squeezed by South East by two wickets in a low-scoring affair. South East were bowled out for 103, with Ronaldo Siewsankar scoring 40 and Devish Thomas leading the East attack with four for 11.
Giovanni McKnight then grabbed five for 14 to keep South East in the hunt, but East got to 104 for eight with four overs to spare with timely hands from Thomas (18 not out) and Sanjiv Bachu (22).
In the other two matches, North whipped South by 57 runs, with Central’s Saveer Rambaran (five for one) helping to bowl out Tobago for just 55 as his team romped to an eight-wicket victory.
At PowerGen Sports Club, North captain Davis Guerra had a fine allround performance as he scored 60 and then took figures of three for 14 to help his team past South. Jiovanne Cooper (four for 27) was also integral to the win as his spell helped to roll over South for 124 in response to North’s score of 181 for eight.
