PowerGen Penal Sports Club put on an emphatic display yesterday when they claimed the TT Cricket Board's (TTCB) 30-over title with a 59-run win over Profilbau Victoria United at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy (BLCA) in Tarouba.
Batting first, PowerGen posted an imposing total of 224 for nine, with top-order batsman Jeremy Solozano leading the way with 75 off 63 balls. Victoria were then bowled out for 165 by the 28th over, with lanky pacer Uthman Muhammad claiming four for 36 to lead the PowerGen attack.
PowerGen didn't have the greatest start to the final, as opening batsman Daniel Williams was dismissed by Nicholas Ali (two for 32) with the second ball of the match, with no runs on the board. Solozano joined Cephas Cooper in the middle, and the pair immediately got busy to steady the PowerGen innings with a brisk 63-run stand for the second wicket. Cooper hit three sixes in his innings of 39 before he became Ali's second victim in the 11th over.
Solozano then shared in an 84-run partnership for the third wicket with Jason Mohammed (38 off 37) as they pushed PowerGen's run rate up to seven runs per over. Mohammed and Solozano fell in quick succession as PowerGen's score moved to 161 for four by the 23rd over.
Allrounder Navin Bidaisee (32 off 22) and Dejourn Charles (18 off 14) then contributed timely cameos as PowerGen pushed their score past 220. Pacer Chadeon Raymond got the key wickets of Bidaisee and Mohammed and led the Victoria attack with figures of three for 43.
Victoria had an absolutely dreadful start to their run chase and lost three wickets in the first seven overs with only 29 runs on the board. Grenadian Johann Jeremiah was out caught-behind to off-spinner Jon-Russ Jaggessar (one for six) with the first ball of the chase, with Jeremiah Cruickshank (six) and Jorden Warner (six) also falling cheaply.
Eton Bhal (40 off 36) and former West Indies under-19 player Leonardo Julien (29 off 37) put on 51 for the fourth wicket, but their team was always well behind the required run rate. Off-spinner Avinash Mahabirsingh (two for 30) and Muhammad dismissed the pair of Julien and Bhal in quick succession as Victoria slipped to 95 for five by the 19th over.
With Muhammad getting into his work, Victoria went down a slippery slope as they slid to 116 for eight by the 22nd over when Damion Joachim (14) was cleaned up by Bidaisee (one for 43). Some late order fight from Eric Garcia (28 off 16) and Raymond (18) added respectability to the Victoria total, but the match was wrapped up in the 28th over when Raymond was bowled by burly left-arm pacer Shaaron Lewis (two for 19).
Summarised Scores:
POWERGEN: 224/9 from 30 overs (Jeremy Solozano 75, Cephas Cooper 39; Chadeon Raymond 3/43, Nicholas Ali 2/32) vs VICTORIA UNITED: 165 from 27.4 overs (Eton Bhal 40, Leonardo Julien 29; Uthman Muhammad 4/36, Shaaron Lewis 2/19). PowerGen won by 59 runs.
