Legislation to increase the legal ages for the consumption of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis, as well as participation in gambling, has now been passed in both the House of Representatives and the Senate and will become law when proclaimed by President Christine Kangaloo.
The Miscellaneous Provisions (Alcohol, Cannabis, Dangerous Drugs, Gambling and Tobacco) Bill, 2026 was passed in the Senate following a marathon debate on Tuesday which continued past midnight.
A total of 15 senators voted in favour of the Bill, 12 voted against and three abstained.
