Buyers of alcohol and tobacco products may soon be required to produce national identification with passage on Wednesday of the Miscellaneous Provisions (Alcohol, Cannabis, Dangerous Drugs, Gambling and Tobacco) Bill, 2026, in the House of Representatives.
However, it is not yet clear whether only some consumers would be affected under amendments to the bill, which would allow for identification to be produced to verify a person’s age.
The bill was passed 23-10, with no abstentions, and with several amendments being agreed to during the committee stage.
