The U.S. military operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores last Saturday came at the expense of the lives of many, according to Venezuelan and Cuban officials.
Venezuela’s Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said late Wednesday that around 100 people were killed during the U.S. raid, which took Maduro from power. While Caracas had previously not disclosed an official death toll, the Venezuelan army published a list of 23 personnel who died during the operation. Cuban authorities said 32 members of its military and intelligence services stationed in Venezuela were also killed.
Maduro reportedly sustained a leg injury, and Flores suffered a head injury during the attack. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez, whom Cabello praised as “courageous,” declared a week of mourning for members of the military killed during the raid.
