(Kaieteur News) – When a King comes visiting, one would have thought that the occasion would call for something a little more distinguished than a garden party. Not that there is anything wrong with garden parties. They are pleasant affairs, especially when the weather cooperates, the drinks are cold, the food is plentiful and nobody has to stand too close to somebody whose political opinions might cause indigestion.
But this was no ordinary visitor. This was King Charles III, Monarch of the United Kingdom, head-of-state of several Commonwealth realms and one of the most recognisable figures in the world. His was on a State Visit to Guyana, an occasion of considerable diplomatic and historical significance. One would therefore have expected, in keeping with the conventions traditionally associated with State Visits by a reigning monarch, a State Banquet or at least a formal State Dinner.
