The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has expressed deep sadness at the passing of calypso icon Slinger Francisco, who died on Sunday, September 27.
Francisco, popularly known as “The Mighty Sparrow,” was regarded as one of the region’s most acclaimed and accomplished calypsonians. Born in Grenada and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, his music captured the rhythms and sentiments of the wider Caribbean, offering sharp social and political commentary through an artform CARICOM described as unique to the Caribbean experience.
Over a career spanning the Caribbean, Europe and the United States, Francisco entertained, educated and inspired audiences for decades, helping to promote Caribbean culture on the global stage through what CARICOM called his lyrical brilliance. He penned more than 500 calypsos, produced upwards of 70 albums, and won numerous titles, including 10 Calypso Monarch crowns and eight Road March victories.
