Judge frees cop accused of helping ‘Fishy’ escape

A POLICE officer who was detained over allegations that he had assisted a wanted man to escape from police custody has been released from detention after a High Court judge ordered on Sunday that he be freed pending any charges that are to be brought against him.

The order was made by Justice Karen Reid, following the filing of a habeas corpus application by the officer’s attorney Keron Ramkhalwhan.

The officer was detained on September 17 over allegations of misbehaviour in public office arising from claims that he picked up wanted suspect Jamal Bartholomew, also known as “Fishy”, from the Port of Spain General Hospital and dropped him off near Topper’s restaurant at Grand Bazaar, Valsayn.
