Driver flees, leaves 72lbs cocaine in pickup on Ituni trail

Police are investigating the discovery of 72.1 pounds (32.7 kilograms) of cocaine found during an operation along the Five Miles–Ituni Trail in the Upper Demerara River area on Friday.

The discovery was made at about 17:00h on September 11, when police ranks observed a motor pickup travelling out of the trail. Upon seeing the police, the driver stopped the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes, leaving the pickup behind. Ranks searched the vehicle and found a large garbage bag on the floor behind the driver’s seat. The bag contained 30 rectangular parcels, which were examined and found to contain a whitish, rock-like substance suspected to be cocaine. The cocaine was taken to the Mackenzie Police Station, where it was weighed and amounted to 72.1 pounds (32.7 kilograms). According to Police, the narcotic was lodged pending further investigations, while the motor pickup was also lodged. No arrests have been made and the investigation is continuing.
