THE Office of the Attorney General has been directed by the High Court to pay $60,000 plus interest to a Chaguanas woman after she was unlawfully detained for six hours and slapped across the face by a soldier during a raid at a house on Gasparee Island in 2011.
Following a two day virtual trial, Justice Frank Seepersad yesterday ordered that Sujes McIntosh be awarded $25,000 in damages for the assault; another $25,000 for wrongful detention and an additional $10,000 in exemplary damages given the conduct of the soldiers.
McIntosh brought the claim several years ago, which was docketed to then-High Court judge Justice James Aboud. However, given Aboud's eventual elevation to the Appeal Court, it was re-docketed to Seepersad.
