A prisons officer was shot shortly after his work shift at the prison Friday night, and the suspected gunmen crashed their vehicle as they attempted to flee the scene.

Prison officer Govindra Balgobin, 38, of Barrackpore, was hospitalised in a critical condition.

Balgobin is attached to the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca.
