Two incidents involving visitors in Tobago over the past week have raised fresh concerns about the safety of tourists on the island.
On Friday, a 21-year-old Canadian student visiting Irasmus Cove, Parlatuvier, was assaulted and robbed while at Back Bay Beach, Rabbit Lane, Plymouth. Police said the victim had placed a black waste bag containing a car key, a cellphone, a wallet with credit cards, and $400 TT on the sand when two men approached.
One man, about six feet tall and wearing shorts, a jersey, and a white face mask, grabbed the bag and struck the tourist on the head with a piece of wood as he tried to give chase. The second man, about 5 ft 10 in, fled with the bag into a nearby bushy area. The victim sustained a bleeding wound but was otherwise unharmed. Police continue to investigate.
