A clocking of 7.22 seconds was just about enough for Trinidad and Tobago's Leah Bertrand to advance to the semis of the women's 60-metre event at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland this morning.

Running in the seventh and final heat, the 23-year-old Bertrand finished fourth in the heat behind home favourite, Ewa Swoboda (7.08), Amy Hunt (7.15), and Liranyi Alonso (7.19). With the top three in each heat moving straight to the semis, Bertrand's time saw her progress as the second-fastest of three non-automatic qualifiers.

Bertrand will now take her place in lane one of the second semi from 3.22 pm today (TT time). Jamaica's Brianna Lyston (7.06) will enter the semis with the fastest time, while reigning 100m Olympic champ Julien Alfred was giving a similar clocking. Six ladies dipped under 7.10 seconds in the opening round.

Should Bertrand navigate the semifinals, she will contest the 60m final from 4.20 pm today (TT time). Bertrand won the TT Olympic Committee's (TTOC) Sportswoman of the Year award for 2025, as well as the National Association of Athletics Administration's Senior Female Athlete of the Year award.

Meanwhile, at 1.42 pm today (TT time), Jereem Richards will go after another global medal when he faces the starter in the men's 400m final. The men's 400m event will be timed finals, as eight athletes are being split across two races. Richards will run out of lane four in the second final, which features USA's Khaleb McRae and Canada's Christopher Morales-Williams, who clocked a time of 45.35 to defeat Richards in yesterday's second semifinal. Richards advanced to the final with a 45.87-run and takes his place as one of four non-automatic qualifiers.
