Ace Trinidad and Tobago sprinter Jereem "The Dream" Richards added another global medal to his tally today when he claimed bronze in the men's 400-metre event at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Poland.
Running out of lane four in the second of two timed finals, Richards (45.39 seconds) placed third behind Canadian gold-medallist Christopher Morales-Williams (44.76) and American silver-medallist Khaleb McRae (45.03) in what was a blistering race. The top three in the second final were also faster than the winner of the first final, the USA's Chris Robinson (45.55).
The breakneck pace in the second final saw a 20.74 split at the 200-metre mark, as Richards tried his utmost to stay connected to frontrunners McRae and Morales-Williams. With Morales-Williams pulling away from the four-man field en route to a new championship record, McRae and Richards also finished well to ensure their podium places.
In 2022, Richards won the men's 400m World Indoor title in 45 seconds flat. Meanwhile, last year, on the outdoor circuit, he ran a stunning national record of 43.72 to land silver at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
In about an hour, Richards' TT compatriot Leah Bertrand will face the starter in the semis of the women's 60m event at 3.22 pm.
