Akil De Vignes, who in July climbed a Ferris wheel at MovieTowne’s Carousel Park to rescue a four-year-old child dangling from a pod, will be honoured with the Hummingbird Medal (Bronze) at today’s 56th national awards ceremony at Queen’s Hall, St Ann’s.
The annual national awards recognise citizens for their contributions to society in various spheres. De Vignes, who lived a quiet life before the incident propelled him into the national spotlight, will be formally recognised for his bravery.
Speaking by telephone with the Express yesterday, De Vignes said he had not expected the national attention. However, he added that when he received the call from the Office of the President, he welcomed it with pride and joy.
