Judge: State failed prisoner ‘at every level’

Thirteen years behind bars ended with a $2.45 million award for Nadia Pooran after the High Court found she endured degrading prison conditions, inadequate medical and psychological care, sexual abuse by a prison officer and unlawful treatment by prison authorities.

In awarding compensatory and vindicatory damages an a judgment delivered on Friday, Justice Robin Mohammed found that Pooran’s constitutional rights were repeatedly breached during her incarceration at the Women’s Prison, Golden Grove, Arouca, between April 9, 2003, and April 28, 2016.
