The Venezuelan government issued a strong communiqué on Saturday condemning the United States for what it described as an “extremely serious military aggression” against the country. The statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, had been captured during pre-dawn strikes on Caracas and surrounding states.
The communiqué, released by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, accused the U.S. of targeting both civilian and military locations in Caracas, Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira, in what it called a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter. It warned that the attacks threaten international peace and put millions of lives at risk, framing the operation as an attempt to seize Venezuela’s strategic resources, including oil and minerals.
“This act constitutes a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations, especially Articles 1 and 2, which enshrine respect for the sovereignty and legal equality of states and prohibit the use of force,” the statement said.
