A CARAPICHAIMA man accused of raping his former girlfriend was acquitted on Wednesday after a High Court judge found the State had failed to prove the allegation beyond a reasonable doubt.
However, the 31-year-old man was convicted of larceny after admitting he took his ex-girlfriend’s cellular phone during an argument.
He had appeared before Justice Nalini Singh in the San Fernando High Court on charges of rape and larceny arising out of an incident on April 7, 2025. In delivering reasons for her verdict, Justice Singh said the evidence established the theft of the phone but left the court with reasonable doubt on the rape allegation because of material omissions in the prosecution’s case, weaknesses in the evidence and the absence of independent corroboration.
