Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has announced the establishment of a committee, headed by permanent secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister Natasha Barrow, in collaboration with the National Trust of Trinidad and Tobago, to oversee the renaming of Nelson Island.
The Prime Minister said the process will include public participation, with citizens invited to submit recommendations and proposals.
Speaking during a visit to Nelson Island alongside India’s Minister of External Affairs, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Persad-Bissessar described East Indian Indentureship as a form of “human trafficking” used to sustain the British Empire.
