A 27-year-old is now nursing a gunshot injury after he was shot during a confrontation with the policeman on Wednesday along the Schoonard Highway, West Bank Demerara (WBD). Based on reports received, ranks from the La Parfaite Harmonie Police Station responded to a report of a male walking along the highway with what appeared to be a firearm in his waist.
Upon arrival, a policeman reportedly approached the man, who allegedly drew an object from his waist and pointed it in the direction of the rank. In retaliation, the policeman discharged a round at the man who reportedly dropped the object and fled into a nearby trench and rice field. He was subsequently apprehended and a gunshot wound was observed under his left armpit.
As such, he was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH), where he was admitted under guards. The object recovered at the scene was later identified as a black Glock air gun. Investigations are ongoing.
