Grief hung heavily in the air at the Erin Seventh-day Adventist Church yesterday as hundreds of relatives, classmates, teachers and villagers gathered to bid farewell to murdered 12-year-old Mercedez Layne.
A wreath of pink flowers lay on her white coffin, trimmed with soft blue and lilac accents, bearing her body dressed in a pink dress and a gold tiara.
Twelve-year-old Mercedez Layne was described as a child who was full of life and nurtured dreams of becoming a nurse.
