Labour Minister Leroy Baptiste yesterday piloted legislation which could make sweeping changes to labour laws and offers more protection to retrenched workers.
The Retrenchment and Severance Benefits (Amendment) Bill, 2026 provides expanded protections, stricter rules for employers and will significantly raise the cost of retrenchment of workers.
The Bill proposes changes on how layoffs, redundancy, consultation, and severance are handled.
