Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has dismissed the Opposition’s claim that the increase in road traffic penalties is a revenue-generating measure.
She yesterday described it as hypocritical for the People’s National Movement (PNM) to says this to the country when the data showed that under its administration, a demerit points system was imposed on the population, resulting in over $600 million in tickets issued for traffic offences and more than $400 million in revenue actually collected over a five-year period from May 2020 to 2025.
The Prime Minister said she was provided with data from the Police Service showing that, under the former government, heavy fines were imposed year after year under the demerit points system, which came into effect in May 2020.
