Transport Minister Eli Zakour has defended the doubling of traffic fines come January 1, following criticism yesterday over the Christmas Day publication of a Legal Notice increasing penalties for more than 60 offences.

The Government published a Legal Notice doubling most traffic fines, effective January 1, 2026.

The notice amended the Ninth Schedule of the Act, with some offences seeing fines double and several others increasing by over 100%. These included offences such as driving without insurance, unlicensed driving, and unsafe vehicles.
