Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said yesterday electricity was temporarily disconnected in Beetham Gardens to protect residents, police officers, firefighters and utility workers following an arson attack at TSTT’s Laventille Work Centre that threatened surrounding communities.
She said the fire, which occurred near the Angostura compound, could have triggered explosions and widespread destruction had it spread to nearby warehouses.
Persad-Bissessar was responding to allegations by Opposition MP Kareem Marcelle that a United National Congress (UNC) minister had intervened to prevent the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) from restoring electricity to the community by 7 a.m.
