On Christmas Day, Government moved to double most traffic fines under the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, with the increases taking effect from January 1, 2026.
The changes are contained in Legal Notice No. 471, published on December 25, amending the Ninth Schedule of the Act and increasing penalties for dozens of offences, including speeding, documentation breaches and other road traffic violations.
Under the amendments, fines previously set at $1,000 have been increased to $2,000, $750 to $1,500, $300 to $600, and $450 to $900. Other penalties were also raised, including $2,000 fines doubled to $4,000, while one offence now attracts a $10,000 fine, up from $1,000.
