In a historic reversal of more than three decades of diplomatic support, Trinidad and Tobago today voted against a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an end to the US’ economic embargo of Cuba.
The resolution, titled, ‘‘Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” was adopted despite decreased support, passing 130-for and 17-against earlier today. Last year, the resolution received the support of more than 160 countries who voted in favour, with only 12 abstaining.
The UN has called for an end to the cold-war era embargo since the early 90’s, with Trinidad and Tobago voting in favour of the resolution more than 30 times. The country only once abstained from the vote, when the resolution was first brought before the UNGA in 1992.
