Work advances on Buzz Bee Dam to Land of Canaan highway

Construction works are progressing on the new four-lane highway from Buzz Bee Dam at Craig to Land of Canaan, East Bank of Demerara (EBD).

This is according to the Housing Ministry, which said in an update on Sunday that the major infrastructure project will ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity along the East Bank corridor. Last year, contracts to the tune of $52.5 billion were awarded for this new road project, which is divided into eight lots. The highway will include medians, safety features, margin sealing and pull-off lanes, and will extend towards Land of Canaan. The new four-lane highway will connect to the Great Diamond to Craig Highway, which is also connected to the Heroes Highway. The distance from Great Diamond to Craig is approximately 4.2 kilometres (km), while the new section extending to Land of Canaan will cover about 11.3 km. Currently, the Ogle to Eccles four-lane highway is connected to the Heroes Highway, and works are ongoing to extend the highway to Providence, EBD. The approximately 2 km bypass road will continue from the Ogle end of the highway and connect to the Heroes Highway at the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge roundabout thus creating an alternative and smoother link for commuters. Future plans also include linking the new Craig to Land of Canaan highway to the Ogle Highway, as well as, an expansion to create a faster route to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) in Timehri by continuing from Land of Canaan to the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, which is also presently undergoing upgrades. The design for that new road from Land of Caanan to the Soesdyke-Linden Highway has been completed. Simultaneously, works are ongoing on the main East Bank Demerara (EBD) public road from Good Success to Timehri. However, these works have been causing major traffic congestion along the EBD road with commuters complaining about the inconvenience of being stuck in traffic for hours almost on a daily basis. But back in July 2025, President Dr Irfaan Ali had apologised for the situation and urged citizens traversing the EBD road to be patient, explaining that this is all necessary towards development and improving the lives of Guyanese.
