Trinidad and Tobago yesterday abstained for the first time from a United Nations resolution on the International Criminal Court, breaking a two-decade record of support for the institution whose creation was championed by former Prime Minister Arthur NR Robinson.
The country has typically shown support for the “Report of the International Criminal Court’ resolution which has been adopted by the UN General Assembly every year since 2005. Between 2005 and 2022, the resolution which affirms institutional support, has been adopted without vote, with the country at times sponsoring or appearing as an additional sponsor.
As voting on its adoption started in 2023 and as consensus among member states on the existence of the court declined, Trinidad and Tobago voted in favour and again sponsored the resolution. It affirmed the resolution again in 2024 and 2025.
