Trinidad and Tobago’s vote against a United Nations resolution calling for an end to the US’ economic embargo of Cuba has drawn criticism from former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley who this afternoon described the vote as a ‘shameful’ one.
Earlier today the country broke its historical streak of voting in favour of the resolution which has been brought before the United Nations General Assembly every year since 1992. Trinidad and Tobago was one of 71 countries that abstained that year. It has since then voted in favour of the resolution more than 30 times, including throughout the five years the former People’s Partnership government led by current Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar retained power between 2010 and 2015.
Rowley, who over the weekend joined a number of former Caribbean Heads of State in signing a letter urging member states to vote in favour of the resolution, earlier this evening attached a post referencing the vote to his Facebook page.
