(Kaieteur News) – There are tragedies that leave a nation speechless, and then there are those that force us to confront the darkest corners of our humanity. The death of six-year-old Orlando Jaikarran is one such tragedy. A little boy who should have been filling his days with laughter, play and the innocent dreams of childhood is instead at the centre of a horror that has broken hearts, shaken families and left Guyana searching for answers. The reported circumstances of his death are almost too painful to contemplate. That the person accused of taking his life is his own father makes this tragedy even more devastating.
Orlando was only six. At that tender age, a child should know nothing of betrayal, cruelty or the terror of losing his life. A child should know the warmth of a parent’s embrace, the security of a home and the reassurance that the adults around him will protect him from harm. For Orlando, that fundamental promise of childhood has been shattered in the most heartbreaking way imaginable.
