Police repaint school crossings, hold road safety lecture as new school term commences

Members of the Regional Police Division Two Traffic Department, with assistance from residents, repainted several pedestrian crossings on Saturday as part of efforts to improve road safety ahead of the new school term. Between 13:00h and 17:00h, two police ranks led the exercise, which focused on crossings near schools and other locations in Region Two. The crossings repainted were located at Abram Zuil Secondary School, Fisher’s Primary School, the Onderneeming Public Road Junction, Huist Dieren Primary School, Aurora Primary School, Good Hope Nursery School and Good Hope Primary School. The exercise comes as the new school term commenced today, with motorists being reminded to give way to pedestrians, particularly in school zones and at marked pedestrian crossings. Traffic Department in Division Three also conducted a driver education lecture on Saturday in keeping with the 2025–2026 road safety theme, “Careful Driving Saves Lives.”

Two Police Inspectors, along with ranks from the Sans Souci and Wales Police Stations and the Traffic Department, conducted the exercise along the Vriesland to Free and Easy Public Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD) and at the Sans Souci Police Station compound. The session addressed several road safety issues, including the Five C’s, defensive driving, proper maintenance of motor vehicles, the importance of wearing safety helmets, the use of coloured lights on motor vehicles, and the need for motorists to remain vigilant when approaching school zones and pedestrian crossings. The officers also highlighted the issue of obscured identification marks on motor vehicles. Drivers participated in the session by raising questions, which were addressed by Inspectors Mohamed and Glasgow and the accompanying ranks. The Traffic Department reminded road users that road safety requires the collective responsibility of motorists, pedestrians and other road users, particularly with increased activity around schools as the new academic year begins.
