(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill and his team met with residents, business owners, religious leaders, motorists, and other stakeholders on Friday to discuss the planned reconstruction of the East Coast Demerara Road corridor between the Mahaica and Abary bridges.
Held at the Mahaicony Technical and Vocational Training Centre, the consultation covered the project’s design and scope, environmental and social impacts, and the grievance redress mechanism available to affected residents.
The Ministry of Public Works said the four-lane highway is designed for a 20-year lifespan and will be built in three lots, with initial rehabilitative work starting on Lots 1 and 2. The upgrade will include widened lanes with a median, street lighting, raised crosswalks, pedestrian and cattle-crossing signage, rumble strips, and improved junctions. The project also includes construction of three major bridges — over the Mahaica, Mahaicony, and Abary rivers.
