Grenada mourns Mighty Sparrow; celebrates enduring Caribbean legacy

Grena­da has joined Trinidad and To­ba­go and the wider Caribbean in mourn­ing the death of leg­endary ca­lyp­son­ian Slinger Fran­cis­co, the Mighty Spar­row, with the is­land’s Min­is­ter for Tourism, Cre­ative Econ­o­my and Cul­ture de­scrib­ing him as one of the re­gion’s most cel­e­brat­ed cul­tur­al icons.

In a con­do­lence mes­sage is­sued on Sun­day, Sen­a­tor Adri­an Thomas said Spar­row’s death was a loss to the Caribbean’s cul­tur­al com­mu­ni­ty, while high­light­ing the spe­cial sig­nif­i­cance of his Grena­di­an roots.

Spar­row was born in Grand Roy, St John, Grena­da, be­fore mak­ing Trinidad and To­ba­go his home and the cen­tre of his cel­e­brat­ed mu­si­cal ca­reer.
