PresÂiÂdent ChrisÂtine KanÂgaÂloo has proÂclaimed the Home InÂvaÂsion (Self-DeÂfence and DeÂfence of PropÂerÂty) Act, bringÂing inÂto force legÂisÂlaÂtion that alÂlows homeÂownÂers to use force, inÂcludÂing lethal force, to deÂfend themÂselves and their propÂerÂty durÂing a home inÂvaÂsion.
The law, comÂmonÂly reÂferred to as âstand your groundâ legÂisÂlaÂtion, was passed in the SenÂate on DeÂcemÂber 7, 2025, withÂout amendÂments, afÂter it was apÂproved in the House of RepÂreÂsenÂtaÂtives on NoÂvemÂber 28, 2025.
UnÂder the Act, anyÂone conÂvictÂed of a home inÂvaÂsion faces up to 25 years in prison or a fine of $750,000.
