If a career-best First-Class score of 220 doesn't get you back in the good books of the West Indies selector(s), then I don't think anything else will.
Out-of-favour West Indies wicket-keeper/batsman Joshua Da Silva would have definitely turned heads today, as he pushed on from his overnight score of 72 to plunder 220 off 304 balls for the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in their West Indies Championship match against Leeward Islands Hurricanes at the Antigua Recreation Ground.
Playing the Leewards for the third and final time in a unique West Indies Four-Day Championship season, the Red Force captain Da Silva cashed in on a sometimes wayward bowling attack to notch a ninth First-Class century. Da Silva was the last man out for the Red Force in today's final session, as they pushed their first-innings score to a mammoth 522 for nine before the declaration came.
Da Silva first shared in a 174-run stand for the fourth wicket with Amir Jangoo (83 off 181), before putting on 132 for the sixth wicket with Terrance Hinds, who lived a charmed life in his knock of 44.
It's another statement with the bat from Da Silva, who last played a Test match for the Windies against Bangladesh in December 2024. The 27-year-old Da Silva is yet to feature in a Test match under all-format coach Daren Sammy, but it's fair to say the former Windies vice-captain has been putting in the work to regain his place.
In last year's regional First-Class season, Da Silva scored 583 in six matches at an average of 64.77, with teammate Jason Mohammed (679 runs) being the only player to better his run tally last season.
In the first match against the Leewards this season, Da Silva made 62 before scoring 36 in the second match, which was eventually abandoned because of a dangerous pitch.
Will Da Silva's double-hundred be enough to get him back in maroon colours?
