Rain may have wiped out the first session of play. Still, the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force batsmen have found their stride in their final West Indies Championship clash with the Leeward Islands Hurricanes, closing day one on 247 for three at the Antigua Recreation Ground.
In only the first over of today's play, the Red Force hit a stumbling block as opener Evin Lewis was forced to retire hurt without facing a ball, after being struck on the ankle by a throw as he and Cephas Cooper (six) scrambled through for a single. As it turned out, Cooper didn't stick around too long himself, as he was caught in the slip cordon by Justin Greaves off the bowling of fast bowler Oshane Thomas (two for 44).
After the early setback, Jyd Goolie (36 off 52 balls) and veteran Jason Mohammed (47 off 64) got stuck in with an aggressive 61-run partnership for the second wicket before the former was brilliantly caught on the backward square leg boundary by Kelvin Pitman.
Mohammed looked set for a 21st First-Class fifty, but was dismissed by Thomas, who produced a good short ball on the ARG surface, allowing for the agile Karima Gore to take a sharp catch at gully. With the Red Force's score on 115 for three at that stage, skipper Joshua Da Silva (72 not out off 125) and Amir Jangoo (69 not out off 137) have steadied the ship with their unbeaten 132-run stand for the fourth wicket. Both batsmen got to the fifty landmark in the same over off Gore's left-arm spin, and appear to be looking to bigger things on day two after steering the Red Force to stumps without any further damage.
Summarised Scores:
TT RED FORCE - 247/3 (Joshua Da Silva 72 not out, Amir Jangoo 69 not out, Jason Mohammed 47, Jyd Goolie 36; Oshane Thomas 2/44) vs LEEWARD ISLANDS HURRICANES
