An intriguing day of cricket lies ahead for captain Joshua Da Silva and his Trinidad and Tobago Red Force team, as they hunt an outright win on the final day of their third-round West Indies Championship fixture with the Leeward Islands Hurricanes at the Antigua Recreation Ground.
Today, the Red Force bowlers, led by pacer Anderson Phillip, went to work as they took ten wickets as their team enforced the follow-on against the hosts. Leewards began the day on 88 for four in their first innings, responding to the Red Force's massive score of 522 for nine declared. Thanks to a fighting century from wicket-keeper/batsman Jahmar Hamilton, who picked up an injury on day one, the Leewards eventually got to 345 all out in their first innings. Hamilton made 121 off 119 balls and struck nine fours and nine sixes as he frustrated the Red Force bowlers in a 71-run stand for the final wicket with Oshane Thomas.
The right-handed Hamilton was the last man out, giving Phillip his fourth wicket of the innings. Despite Hamilton's best efforts, the Leewards were unable to avoid the follow-on. Phillip then quickly got to work by taking the wickets of Kofi James (three) and Karima Gore (two) in the third over of Leewards' second innings as the Red Force took full control.
Trailing by 177 runs after the first innings, the Leewards batsmen needed to show some heart to avoid the Red Force from storming to a win inside three days. The struggling Jewel Andrew tried to hit his way to good form, but was eventually dismissed for 27, courtesy of a fine catch by Jason Mohammed.
With the Leewards on 97 for four at that stage, captain Justin Greaves (19 not out) brought a calmness to the proceedings and has since added 63 for the fifth wicket with Keacy Carty (84 not out off 127). The pair took the Leewards to 160 for four at stumps, with their team still needing to score 17 more runs to ensure the Red Force bat again.
With the top team at the end of this round advancing directly to the final, the Red Force will know the importance of an outright win, as table-toppers and reigning champs Guyana Harpy Eagles are also going after an outright victory in their clash with the Windward Islands Volcanoes.
The Barbados Pride have confirmed a top-three spot and a playoff place after defeating the Jamaica Scorpions by an innings and 11 runs in their encounter at Sabina Park, Jamaica.
